Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition
…
Program
Description:
A coalition working to reduce substance abuse through community
collaboration.
How it Works:
The coalition maintains an infrastructure for substance abuse
prevention which aides in the coordination of training, technical
assistance, and networking necessary to achieve substance abuse
prevention goals. It also tracks data trends to assess substance
abuse prevalence. The group serves as an advocate for prevention
programming and education. In accordance with the Tobacco
Prevention Program, the coalition aides in the facilitation of
tobacco prevention initiatives in the school system. The Loudon
County Health Improvement Council serving as fiscal agent for the
coalition works to ensure the continuance of the Coalition through
various fund seeking initiatives.
The Coalition is made up of volunteers from LCHIC, local churches,
law enforcement, schools, medical professional and National Guard.
In October 2005 the Coalition was awarded a grant from Drug-Free
Communities. The Grant provides computers for after-school programs
for youth ages 13-17. The Coalition partners with the Boys & Girls
Club to offer an after-school Cyber Cafe. In addition the Coalition
offers programs during Red Ribbon week and provides bracelets to all
students in Loudon County. This year a program called Take Control
USA was presented in the schools to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It is
a multi-media substance abuse prevention program. Beginning this
year the group will sponsor the National Night Out program on August
7.
